The effects on lateral displacement of the magnitudes of embankment loading, as well as the vacuum pressure, the loading rate, and the undrained shear strength and consolidation properties of the soil deposit, have been explicitly included in a newly defined parameter, which is given by the ratio of an index pressure to the representative soil shear strength (RLS). The ratio of δnm to the surface settlement under the embankment centreline, Sf, is also defined as the normalised maximum (net) lateral displacement (NLD). A direct relationship between RLS and NLD has been proposed, with a prescribed range, based on the results of 18 field case histories from 12 different project sites in five countries. It is suggested that the proposed relationship can be used as a preliminary design tool for preloading projects involving combinations of a vacuum pressure and an embankment pressure as well as PVD improvement.]]> Wed 11 Apr 2018 13:34:18 AEST ]]> The local and the migrant: limits of mutual recognition https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:3972 Wed 11 Apr 2018 11:53:04 AEST ]]> Piezoelectric bimorph actuator with integrated strain sensing electrodes https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32109 Wed 02 May 2018 13:47:53 AEST ]]> Displacement as Condition: A Refugee, a Farmer and the Teleology of Life https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:45969 Tue 27 Feb 2024 14:05:27 AEDT ]]> Lived experiences of environmental change: solastalgia, power and place https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:42077 solastagia has been developed by environmental philosopher Albrecht to understand the psychological trauma, also referred to as place-based distress, experienced because of environmental change. In this article, we explore ways to further this concept. The article draws on ethnographic fieldwork in a village in the mid-western region of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, which is surrounded by three large open-cut coal mines. Over the past decade, the mines, in particular the Peabody-owned Wilpinjong mine closest to the village, have had a significant impact on biophysical, social and temporal landscapes in the area. We argue that whilst solastalgia may help explore the relationship between the environmental and human distress triggered in these circumstances, the sense of displacement and loss that emerge are entangled with questions of power and dispossession beyond the biophysical realm. Underpinned by a phenomenological framework of analysis, we contend that place-based distress should be understood as an ontological trauma, as the fabrics of place, belonging and the social relations embedded within disrupt the ongoing sense of being associated with home. These include the means to not only link to the past, but also to imagine the future.]]> Thu 18 Aug 2022 11:03:33 AEST ]]> Public participation in megaproject-induced displacement and resettlement https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:54169 Thu 08 Feb 2024 12:23:07 AEDT ]]> Boko Haram: the security and supply chain management challenges of providing relief https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32662 Thu 05 Jul 2018 11:02:14 AEST ]]> A case study of ground response due to diaphragm wall installation https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:17434 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:01:39 AEDT ]]> Relative levels of food aggression displayed by Common Mynas when foraging with other bird species in suburbia https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21761 Sturnus tristis) as a potential explanation for their invasive success, and quantified the effect of this behaviour on other birds. Common Mynas did not display significantly more aggression than other species, and displayed significantly less aggression than native Australian Magpies (Cracticus tibicen). Furthermore, the presence of Common Mynas at a feeding resource had no greater effect on the abundance of heterospecific individuals than the presence of any other species. Presence of each species was negatively correlated with the presence of other species, that is all species were less likely to approach the feeding station if any other species was present there. Common Mynas also did not displace other birds at feeding sites any more frequently than three of the other four species, and less frequently than two other native species. Overall, the findings suggest that Common Mynas do not display more food-related aggression than other species in suburban habitats, suggesting that competitive aggression over food is not likely to be one of the behavioural traits leading to the success of Common Mynas in suburban habitats.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:53:07 AEDT ]]> Beyond migration: a critical review of climate change induced displacement https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:48175 Sat 11 Mar 2023 12:23:32 AEDT ]]> Policy interventions for disaster-related internal displacement in Australia https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:52830 Mon 30 Oct 2023 09:41:21 AEDT ]]> Mining voids: Extraction and emotion at the Australian coal frontier https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:40767 Mon 18 Jul 2022 14:08:40 AEST ]]> A dying village: Mining and the experiential condition of displacement https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:51226 Fri 25 Aug 2023 11:16:23 AEST ]]> Surface mass variation on the solid earth inferred from GPS deformation time series and GRACE gravity field measurements https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:36497 Fri 22 May 2020 15:40:04 AEST ]]> Making the case for policy interventions in disaster governance and management in Australia to better support internally displaced people https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:53836 Fri 19 Jan 2024 10:10:41 AEDT ]]> Aspects of numerical simulation of torpedo anchor installation https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:26447 Fri 03 Mar 2017 12:23:26 AEDT ]]>
